Anritsu Corporation (President Hirokazu Hamada) has started sales from February 1 of its 1310 nm Chip Carrier Type Semiconductor Amplifier AA3T115CY for use in compact optical transceivers.

This new high-reliability semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA)*1 is based on Anritsu’s long years of experience in the optical communications and test markets, and is used in the company’s own test equipment and devices. It incorporates an aluminum nitride (AlN) compact carrier and can be used together with a silicon platform, etc., to configure an optical transceiver*2 with integrated optics.

Optical transceivers are devices for converting optical signals to electrical signals and vice versa; recently, the number in use has expanded greatly. Anritsu has leveraged its long experience in light-source technologies to develop a wide range of products helping grow optical communications.

Development Background

The explosive growth of data-center networks and Passive Optical Networks (PON) for configuring economic access networks using passive parts has led to widespread use of transceiver modules as key components between different equipment. These systems demand ever-smaller and lower-cost parts, which increases the need for optical transceivers with an integrated optical amplifier and optics.

To meet these requirements, Anritsu has developed this chip carrier type SOA based on its experience in optical devices for the communications market.

Product Outline

This chip-carrier type product has a SOA chip mounted on a compact AlN carrier to form an integrated optical circuit. The peak gain is 18 dB at a center wavelength of 1310 nm. With its low-power consumption design, the polarization dependent gain is just 1.5 dB (typ.).

Technical Terms

*1 SOA (Semiconductor Optical Amplifier)
This optical semiconductor amplifies external light input by suppressing resonance using anti-reflection films at both end facets of a semiconductor laser. It is compact with low power consumption compared to fiber amplifiers. Although it suffers from polarization-dependency issues, SOA is seeing widespread rapid adoption due to recent design improvements.
*2 Optical Transceiver
This device converts optical signals to electrical signals and vice versa. There are various designs with different package sizes, transmission speeds, optical fiber types, transmission distances, etc.
